Help Your Dog Achieve a Healthy Weight

Exercise and a nutritional diet – these are the key components to a healthy lifestyle, for people and dogs alike. You may not have considered implementing an exercise and diet regimen for your pooch, but promoting your dog’s good health will ensure that he lives a long, happy life. This article gives you some suggestions on how to maintain your dog’s healthy weight through exercise and incorporating nutritional food, such as low fat dog treats and organic dog biscuits, into his day-to-day routine.
Much like people, it’s easy for a dog to become overweight. Whether it’s from a lack of exercise, the wrong diet, or underlying health problems, your veterinarian should monitor a dog’s weight gain very carefully. The leading cause of weight gain in dogs is well-meaning owners. Too many treats or large portions at meal times can quickly pack on the pounds. Instead of feeding your dog store-brand snacks, try substituting healthier alternatives like low fat dog treats and organic dog biscuits when you want to reward him.
However, it’s possible that something else is causing your dog’s weight gain. Many dogs suffer from health problems such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism results when the thyroid gland fails to produce enough hormones, and weight gain is a very common symptom. Cushing’s syndrome is a type of endocrine disorder caused by large quantities of cortisol in the blood stream. Symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome include rapid weight gain and hair loss, among others. If you suspect that health problems are at the root of your dog’s unhealthy weight, consult your veterinarian immediately. If the vet rules out any significant health problems, you can begin your dog’s new diet and exercise routine.
For starters, you can probably reduce his daily consumption of food and snacks by about 25%. You might also consider feeding him smaller quantities but more frequently. For example, instead of feeding him a single large portion each morning and each evening (with the occasional snack throughout the day), try reducing each portion by one third and adding one additional meal in the afternoon. You could also reduce his portions and substitute a third meal with a few organic dog biscuits or low fat dog treats. Dogs burn the highest amount of calories during the day; you shouldn’t feed him as much near bedtime. If he consumes most of his calories in the morning and afternoon, he’ll have a better chance of burning them off. Ask your vet how much food your pet should eat each day and adjust accordingly. Try not to make any sudden changes to his diet – reduce his portions gradually.
In addition to a healthier diet, you and your dog need to exercise regularly. As with his diet, don’t rush your pet into a rigorous exercise routine. If you take on too much, too soon, your dog could suffer from adverse side effects. Start at a relaxing pace: take a walk every morning. Go around the block or down to the park for half an hour. There’s no harm in rewarding your dog with a few low fat dog treats or organic dog biscuits when you get home. After you feel comfortable with your routine, step it up a little. Go out for 30 minutes twice a day and play with him in the back yard. A good workout is beneficial for you and your pup, but keep an eye out for rapid weight loss. Your dog should not lose more than 5 to 8 percent of his starting weight in a single month. Be sure to talk to your vet about a safe target weight. If you have an especially strenuous workout, give your pup plenty of water. Treat him to some organic dog biscuits or low fat dog treats, but don’t let him eat too quickly.
